Located in Volunteer Park is a Spanish-American War memorial comprised of a rough-hewn granite piece with a metal plaque placed front. There is a cut shape of an eagle that surrounds the plaque which reads:
“RENAMED 1901 IN TRIBUTE TO THE VOLUNTEER SERVICES OF SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR VETERANS WHO LIBERATED THE OPPRESSED PEOPLES OF CUBA, PUERTO RICO AND THE PHILIPPINE ISLANDS APRIL 1898 - JULY 1902“LORD GOD OF HOSTS BE WITH US YET LEST WE FORGET LEST WE FORGET” ERECTED 1953 |
Volunteer Park was formerly known as the City Park before a well-known Seattle local by the name of James Willis Sayre lobbied local officials to rename it in memory of volunteers of Seattle who fought in the Spanish-American War.
