The island of Jersey is a self-governing parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy, with its own financial, legal and judicial systems, and the power of self-determination. It is part of the ancient Duchy of Normandy, and is ruled by the Duke of Normandy — a title held by the reigning Monarch of the United Kingdom, though unrelated to those duties as king or queen of the UK.
Saint Brelade is one of the twelve parishes of Jersey. Legend has it that St Brelade prayed for land whilst searching for the Islands of the Blest. An island arose from the sea on which he celebrated Easter. As he departed so did the island. It was an enormous fish sent in answer to his prayers.
The coat of arms based on this legend is a large silver fish, shown vertically with its tail at the bottom, on a blue background.
Saint Brelade is the south-western parish of Jersey. Its population is around 9,560, and it borders only one other parish, Saint Peter. The parish is the second-largest parish by surface area, covering 7,103 vergées, which is 11% of the total land surface of the island.
