The bridge was originally over a stretch of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway between Mickle Trafford near Chester in England and Dee Marsh in Wales.

The bridge allowed access between two farms, but later industrial development of the land to the north of the railway made the bridge redundant. It is now very overgrown.

These days the railway is also redundant and has been converted into a shared Greenway for cyclists and walkers. The Greenway is 8 miles long, but forms part of the much longer National Cycle Route 5 that connects Holyhead with Reading.
