In Milton, on top of Great Blue Hill, is the transmitter tower for WGBH radio, 89.7 FM.
The tower is easily accessible as it is within the bounds of the Blue Hills Reservation maintained by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation. Though there is a road to the summit, only authorized vehicles are allowed up it (there are usually tons of hikers and bikers on this road during the weekend, anyway). There are several parking lots and trails to hike the 634 ft hill. The most direct is to park at the lot closest to the ski slope, along Massachusetts Route 138, then walk up the main ski slope, directly, then through the woods to a clearing and the tower behind the Blue Hill Meteorological Observatory.
There is a rectangular utility building next to the tower. The tower itself is four-sided and tapers, then a vertical pole rises from there. The structure is painted alternating colors of red and white. There are small extensions off the main pole.
WGBH is a well-known and venerable radio station that provides news and educational programming. According to the web site, the Lowell Institute Cooperative Broadcast Council started broadcasting on October 1951, from their transmitter in Milton on Great Blue Hill - and the call letters were taken from the hill's name. The first program was a performance by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, directed by Charles Munch. This relationship continues to today, though many performances are now broadcast on the WGBH affiliate, FM 99.5 WCRB.
WGBH Radio is affiliated with both National Public Radio and Public Radio International and American Public Media. The current name of the operator is WGBH Educational Foundation.
