A 49 miles along Hwy 49 series history sign about the Downieville.
Text of Sign:
All Roads Lead To Downieville
The humble mining town of Downieville eventually became the Sierra County seat. It grew into the center of commerce and culture for widespread communities such as Monte Cristo, Goodyears Bar, Eureka, Poker Flat, Brandy City, Forest City, and Smiths Flat (Alleghany).
In 1852 there was an estimated population of 3,000 in Downieville and another 2,000 people scattered along nearby streams. Gold mining was still the main economy in 1874 but mining methods had diversified. Productive hydraulic, drift, and hard rock mines emerged throughout western Sierra County as the “easy pickings” were exhausted.
By 1879 an estimated $15,000,000 in gold had been taken from the Downieville district alone.
Downieville was originally known as “The Forks” because the community was located at the confluence of the North Fork and South Fork of the North Yuba River. The town was renamed Downieville in honor of William Downie in 1850. In 1950 the North Fork was renamed the Downie River. The South Fork name was dropped and renamed the North Yuba River.
