The map is etched on to a slate slab and is mounted on a stone pillar that is situated at a cliff top view point on the Isle of Man's Coastal Path - "Raad my Foillan" (The way of the Gull).
The Path in this part of Maughold runs through the Maughold Brooghs Area of Special Scientific Interest ("ASSI") The reason for the designation in 2011 was to 'formalise the protection of an area which is important for its breeding avifauna and semi-natural coastal habitats; hard cliffs and slopes, coastal grassland, acid grassland and scrub.
The marker was presented by the Friends of The Manx National Trust 1974.
The engraved slab shows North and the scale of the map and the orientation of the Island with respect to the coasts of south-west Scotland and north-west England. There are magnificent views over Ramsey Bay to the North and the coast of Scotland whilst the north-east the Lakeland Fells of north-west England are clearly visible on a day with good visibility.
