The council awarded $116,500 to RBDR to design the project, leaving nearly $600,000 budgeted for the construction work. The money is left over from the 2007 bond election that earmarked $12 million for the West Waco Library and Central Library.
The project will increase the library’s space by more than 50 percent by expanding into sections of the building that the Waco Police Department has used for offices.
That extra space will be used for bookshelves, a conference room, small study rooms and a larger area for children’s activities. All interior surfaces will be replaced to refresh the look of the library.
The project also will replace the roof, update heating and cooling systems and provide a more prominent exterior entrance, library director James Karney said.
Karney said RBDR is using the same design consultant who worked on those libraries, and he expects her renovation design will emphasize the Art Deco features of the Elm Avenue building.
Karney expects work to start on the building this fall and wrap up sometime next year.
