Fondée en 1949 par une association de citoyens, la Bibliothèque des enfants d'Outremont ouvre ses portes dans le sous-sol de la Temple Baptist Church située au 5815, avenue Durocher. Des difficultés financières l'obligent à suspendre ses activités de 1952 à 1954. Avec l'aide de la municipalité, la bibliothèque s'établit dans un local situé au 532, avenue Querbes et elle bonifie sa collection pour desservir les jeunes de 6 à 17 ans. Aprés un déménagement temporaine au collège Saint-Viateur, la bibliothèque municipale est relogée, en 1964, dans la salle communautaire de l'hotêl de ville, au 544, avenue Davaar. En 1966, elle enrichit sa collection pour répondre aux attentes de la clientèle adulte.
Devenue trop étroite à cause des besoins accrus de la population et de l'avènement des nouvelles technologies informatiques et audiovisuelles, le projet de construction d'une bibliothèque municipale plus spacieuse, mieux adaptée et offrant un espace moderne pouvant accueillir la Galerie d'art d'Outremont est élaboré.
La bibliothéque municipale Robert-Bourassa est inaugurée le 31 mars 1998 en présence du maire Jérôme Unterberg et de madame Andrée Bourassa, épouse de feu Robert Bourassa, premier ministre du Québec de 1970 à 1976 et de 1988 à 1994, et résidant d'Outremont.

Founded in 1949 by an association of citizens, the Children's Library of Outremont opened its doors in the basement of the Temple Baptist Church located at 5815 Durocher Avenue. Financial difficulties forced it to suspend its activities from 1952 to 1954. With the help of the municipality, the library set up in a room located at 532 Querbes Avenue and enhanced its collection to serve young people from 6 to 17 years. After a temporary move to the Saint-Viateur College, the municipal library was relocated in 1964 to the community hall of the City Hall at 544 Davaar Avenue. In 1966, it expanded its collection to meet the expectations of the adult clientele.
Having become too narrow in focus, and because of the increased needs of the increasing population and the advent of new computer and audiovisual technologies, a project was started to build a more spacious, better-adapted municipal library with a modern space for the Art Gallery of Outremont included.
The Robert-Bourassa municipal library was officially opened on 31 March 1998 in the presence of Mayor Jérôme Unterberg and Mrs. Andrée Bourassa, wife of the late Robert Bourassa, Premier of Quebec from 1970 to 1976 and from 1988 to 1994, and resident of Outremont.
