In St. Johnsbury, in the backyard of the Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium, is a large screen house that is the Shipee Family Care Butterfly House.
The museum is on Main Street, about a block off U.S. 2. Entering U.S. 2 from the east, turn south onto Railroad Street (still Route 2) to Eastern Ave., turn right and travel on Eastern Ave. to the end, then turn right onto Main Street and drive a short distance to the museum on the right.
The butterfly house is accessed through the museum and out to the backyard. It is a screen house with a curved roof and vertical ends. At one end is the entrance, which has screen doors that have magnets that make a seal. The space is relatively open, with plants all around and butterflies - usually resting somewhere. Caterpillars were on the plants at the time of visit. A staff person was there to tend to the butterfly house and discuss what they were doing and the plight of butterflies - monarchs in particular.
According to the web site, the house has Monarchs, Painted Ladies, Spicebush Swallowtails, Eastern Black Swallowtail and Red Admirals.
