"Sie sind die versteckten Schaltstellen, die hinter der Oberfläche des urbanen Lebens das Miteinander von Kommunikation und Verkehr regeln: Die allseits bekannten grauen Schaltkästen.
Die ISG Bahnhofsviertel Münster e.V. und Stadt Münster wagen ein Experiment und geben im Bahnhofsareal die Schaltschränke für eine künstlerische Intervention frei: Der international renommierte Künstler Tobias Rehberger, bekannt durch seine berühmte Bar "Günter’s (wiederbeleuchtet)", Highlight der Skulptur Projekte Münster 1997, wird einige der Schaltschränke neu gestalten. Aus grauen Kuben werden spielerisch-bunte Sitzobjekte, die dem Stadtbild im Bahnhofsareal neue Akzente geben.
Dabei hat der Künstler in die Objekte immer auch eine eigene Geschichte „eingeflochten“: Von Mumbai über Alabama bis Wanne-Eickel – jedes Objekt bezieht sich auf eine andere Stadt in der Welt. Und immer wenn dort der Mond aufgeht, geht er in Münster auch an – denn eine runde Leuchtkugel thront wie eine strahlende Blüte über jedem Rohrgewächs. „Ich bin absolut offen dafür, wie die Menschen in der Stadt die neuen Objekte annehmen, offen auch für Überraschungen. Ob sie es als Treffpunkt oder als Orientierungspunkt nutzen, ob sie ihren Lieblingsort ausmachen, ob sie sich hier verabreden oder ob sie anhand der verschiedenen Objekte einem Parcours durch die Stadt folgen.
Als Austragungsort der internationalen Skulptur Projekte Münster hat das Thema Kunst und Öffentlichkeit eine lange Tradition in der westfälischen Kunst- und Kulturstadt. Die gemeinsame Initiative „Münster. Kunst + Öffentlichkeit“, zu der sich Stadt, Museen, Kunst akademie und andere Kunstor te zusammengeschlossen haben, trägt dieser Tradition Rechnung. In dem Projekt mit Tobias Rehberger kommt nun die gewachsene Kompetenz einmal mehr zum Ausdruck. Initiator und Träger des Projektes ist die Immobilien- und Standortgemeinschaft (ISG) Bahnhofsviertel Münster e.V. unter dem Vorsitz von Peter Cremer gemeinsam mit der Stadt Münster. Die ISG ist ein Bündnis aus Eigen tümern und Geschäfts leuten des Bahnhofsviertels, das sich die Aufwertung und Pflege des Quartiers zur Aufgabe gemacht hat. Kuratiert wird das Projekt von Dr. Gail B. Kirkpatrick, Leiterin der Kunsthalle Münster."

"They are the hidden networks of switches that regulate communication and transit underneath the surface of urban life: the ubiquitous gray switchboxes. A new project in Münster transforms them into sites of artistic intervention. The internationally renowned artist Tobias Rehberger, known for his famous bar "Günter’s (wiederbeleuchtet)," a highlight of the Sculpture Projects Münster in 1997, redesigned 11 switchboxes at various locations throughout the city. The gray cubes are transformed into playful, colorful objects that create a new image for the area around Münster’s main railway station and invite people to sit, occupy and use the area in new ways.
The artist also "wove" a story into each object: from Goato Alabama to Wanne-Eickel, each box relates to a different city around the world. Whenever the moon rises in each city, it also rises in Münster: each object, each pipe-like construction is illuminated like a brilliant flower by a globe of light. As the artist Tobias Rehberger himself says, "I am totally open to how people here receive these new objects, open for surprises – if they use them as meeting or orientation points, if they become their favorite places, or if they use the different objects as a means to create a new trail throughout the city."
As a venue for the international Sculpture Projects art in public space has a long history in this Westphalian city of art and culture. The joint initiative "Münster. Art + Public ," which includes the City, museums, the Academy of Fine Arts and additional art venues furthers this tradition. Tobias Rehberger’s project validates this initiative's recognized competence and stature. The project’s initiator and supporter is the Immobilien- und Standortgemeinschaft (ISG) Bahnhofsviertel Münster e.V. Under the direction of Peter Cremer together with the City of Münster. ISG is an alliance of property and business owners in Münster's Central Station area dedicated to upgrading and maintaining this district. The project was curated by Gail Kirkpatrick, Director of the Kunsthalle Münster."
