This is one of the most important Lighthouses in Portugal.
It´s part of a group of six lighthouses ordered to be built by decrete of the Marquee of Pombal in 1758 when he created the Portuguese Lighthouse Service.
It´s original tower was square with 20.9 mts high. At the top there was a lamp with 8.2 mts high. Together with the tower there were some buildingsand a church that in 1865 were in ruins. The church identified as the Chapel of Our lady of Victory was known by having a light at the top to guide the navigators.
Little is known about is initial equipment, but, probably was a set of Argand lamps with parabolic reflectors like the other used by other lighthouses at the time.
From 1881 to 1886 the lighthouse was repaired and eqiped with a 3rd order device with a petrol lamp. It had a fixed red light with 17 miles range. This was´t much but was enough for navigating in the canal between Peniche and the Berlengas islands located 5.5 Miles West.
In 1886 it was instaled a sound device.
The light device was replaced in 1923 by a 4th order rotating device still red.
In 1949 it was installed a radiobeacon, now deactivated.
The lighthouse was automatized in 1988 with the instalation of a new optical device with sealed drums. This sistem uses a set of sealed optics like the ones used in the automobiles.
The lighthouse has a garrison of 8 men working also in the Berlenga Lighthouse in shifts.
Recently, in 2002 it was installed a GPS diferential system wich, together with the Sagres (Cabo de São Vicente) lighthouse makes GPS corretions covering all the Portuguese territory.
