Union Veterans of the Civil War got a tombstone paid for by the US Government. For those veterans who did not already have a spot in a family plot, the Grand Army of the Republic, a fraternal organization of Union veterans, provided a burial plot for their members.
The GAR Union Veteran Cemetery is located in a leafy section of Greenwood cemetery, several hundred feet away from the cemetery for Confederate pensioners.
In 1993 the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War Tent No. 1 erected a small memorial recognizing all Union veterans buried at Greenwood, including those buried in the GAR section and in family plots in other parts of the cemetery. That memorial reads as follows:
"In Memoriam

TENT NO. 1
May 30, 1993."
