The Salado Church bell has been moved around several times, but is still in service calling the baptist faithful to worship at this Baptist church whose former pastor, Rev. G. W. Baines, was the maternal grandfather of US President Lyndon Baines Johnson (who my grandmother turned down for a date in 1927 at Southwest Texas State Teacher's Normal School <-- TRUE!!!!!).
A plaque at the bell display gives the history of the bell in timeline format as follows:
"CHURCH BELL PURCHASED IN 1879
1864 -- Salado Baptist Church Organized
1878 -- Original Church Building Erected
1879 -- Bell Placed in Cupola of Original Building
1962 -- Original Building Torn Down
1964 -- Bell Tower Erected in Memory of Rev. G. W. Baines. Original Bell Placed in Tower.
1990 -- Bell Tower Erected in 1964 Demolished.
2004 - New Tower Erected to Commemorate 140th Anniversary of the Church. Original 1979 Bell Placed on Tower."
