The Bunnet Stane or Bonnet Stone is a giant grey sandstone laid down as desert sand dunes in the late Devonian period 400 million years ago when this part of the country lay close to the equator. There are layers arranged at different angles to the horizontal known as dune bedding shaped by softer layers of sandstone which has eroded over time to make the rock look like a giant mushroom or bonnet. The top of the stone is 10 feet by 20 foot across.

The stone is situated at the foot of the Lomond Hills in the kingdom of Fife in Scotland, less than a mile from the highest of them, West Lomond. There are similar rocks in the vicinity but none of this unusual shape. It can be reached from a lay-by on a minor road less than a mile to the north where a signposted overgrown track leads to the stone which is in the middle of a field populated by sheep.
