FR La grotte a eu une vocation militaire évidente, elle est fortifiée, munie de meurtrières, ... mais elle abrite aussi ce lieu de culte probablement édifiée au XVIIe ou XVIIIe siècle, d’où ses noms de grotte de Notre-Dame ou encore grotte des Templiers.

La tradition rapporte qu’un religieux Templier, qui s’était évadé de sa prison lors du procès célèbre intenté à son ordre, vint s’y réfugier et qu’il y mourut en odeur de sainteté. Selon Raymond Collier (1969), une petite communauté de moines, des sortes d’ermites, habitait la grotte durant le XIIIe siècle.

Cette occupation est attestée par un compte de décîme de 1274 (impôt ecclésiastique).

La tradition rapporte que les murs de fortification ont été mis en place au Moyen-Âge, alors que les seigneurs de Rougon harcelaient leurs voisins pour s’accaparer leurs biens, notamment les moulins édifiés le long de la rivière du Baux : “Le Sir de Châteauneuf, à l’époque médiévale, perpétuellement attaqué par ce Sir de Rougon, d’humeur particulièrement combative, concentrait son armée dans la grotte Notre Dame”. En effet, la technique de construction de la courtine et la présence de meurtrières évoquent plutôt le XVIIe, voire le XVIe siècle, période où les conflits sanglants sont fréquents : invasions de la Provence par Charles-Quint et surtout les Guerres de Religion.

Tradition reports that a religious Templar, who had escaped from his prison during the famous trial instituted at his command, came to take refuge there and died there in an odor of sanctity. According to Raymond Collier (1969), a small community of monks, a kind of hermit, lived in the cave during the thirteenth century.

This occupation is attested by a decimal account of 1274 (ecclesiastical tax).

Tradition reports that the walls of fortification were set up in the Middle Ages, while the lords of Rougon harassed their neighbors to grab their property, including the mills built along the river Baux: "The Sir de Chateauneuf, in the medieval period, perpetually attacked by this Sir de Rougon, with a particularly combative humor, concentrated his army in the Notre Dame cave." Indeed, the technique of construction of the curtain and the presence of loopholes evoke rather the seventeenth, even the sixteenth century, period when bloody conflicts are frequent: invasions of Provence by Charles V and especially the Wars of Religion.
