"Im Ersten Weltkrieg wurde der Stadtlöwe an die Türe des Rathauses genagelt.

Ritter von Mann, der Gestalter des Rathaussaales wurde gebeten, einen Entwurf anzufertigen und Architekt Rieperdinger überwachte die Ausführung. Am Sonntag, den 12.12.1915 war es dann soweit. Nach einer „vaterländischen Feier“ im Großen Rathaussaal schritt man zur Tat. Zum Preis zwischen zehn Pfennig und fünf Mark konnte jeder Teilnehmer einen der ca. 4.000 vorhanden Nägel erwerben und unter sachkundiger Anleitung in die Eichentür einschlagen. Für die großen Nägel wurden bis zu 50 Mark je Stück bezahlt.

So wurde dieser „Stadtlöwe“ als heroisches Kriegssymbol geplant, aber als Zeichen der Erinnerung an Not, Trauer und Elend des Krieges und seine unmenschlichen Folgen ausgeführt." (visit link)
