Chungking is large accommodation complex in central Kowloon, near Victoria Harbour. It is famous for its low cost, the large number of rooms, ~1800, the diverse ethnic range of inhabitants, and its vibrant nature. The ground floors are retail, filled with small shops offering SIM cards, phones, electronics, food, and clothing. A room here can be got for $100-$200HK (us$12-25) a night. Cheap for HK.
While its reputation is somewhat negative, the rooms are usually clean, neat, and liveable. The main danger comes from the age of the building (1961) make it a fire risk. Lots of touts outside offering rooms and discounts, check the room first. There is not one guest house, but many, sub-let. Different prices and styles. Try one night before paying the full tariff.
