This small town has an elementary school and the other kids (Middle School and High School) have to go on a boat to get to their school in Avalon. This town has a campground and a beach on either side of the town.
From the guidebook on page 426, "California: a guide to the Golden State": The ISTHMUS lies in the northwestern section of Santa Catalina Island, 14 miles by water, 22 miles by motor road, from Avalon (reached on the 'Round Island Cruise and Isthmus Auto Tour; see below), at a point where the island was almost cut in two when the land sagged during some cataclysm in the distant past. The terrain here is a flat mesa between boring mountains. Fronting PAPEETE BEACH and ISTHMUS COVE is a settlement of one-story, thatched bungalettes for accommodation of a fluctuating summer population. The South Sea Island effect has been sought for all structures, including the store. Various abandoned movie sets are here, most noteworthy of which are the thatched Round House used in the silent picture Rain, and the Continental Hotel Set from the film Sadie Thompson, a remake of Rain in sound. Midway between Isthmus Cove and Catalina Harbor stands the former United States Government Barracks, now living quarters for employees of the island operating company; it was built to house Union troops.
