Built in 1825, the Frontier House is Lewiston's premier landmark. Stage coaches once thundered up to its doors when it served as a stop when Lewiston was the center of the "Great Overland Route Across the Continent." In those early days, Lewiston's population was more than Buffalo's. Some of those who stayed in the hotel were NY Governor Dewitt Clinton, Edward the Prince of Wales, James Fenimore Cooper, Charles Dickens, Henry Clay, and John L. Sullivan.
The most recent use was a McDonald's. It was the only McDonald's in the country inside a historic building. The location closed in December 2004 and now sits vacant.
