Das erste der vier Evangelien des Neuen Testaments wird seit den Zeiten der alten Kirche einem nicht näher bekannten Matthäus (hebr. ?????? Matitjahu „Geschenk JHWHs“) zugeschrieben. Gleichzeitig wurde dieser Autor mit dem Apostel Jesu identifiziert. Diese Identifikation ist nach heutiger Forschung nicht mehr haltbar. Wahrscheinlich war er ein Judenchrist, der sein Evangelium für seine Gemeinde in Syrien schrieb. In der Kunst und im Brauchtum wird Matthäus sowohl als Evangelist als auch als Apostel verehrt und dargestellt. Sein Zeichen ist der Mensch.
Die Figur:
Im Inneren der katholischen Dorfkirche zu Neuengrün befindet sich auf der Balustrade der Kirchenempore wo die Kirchenorgel steht eine Figurenansammlung von Jesus Christus, eingerahmt von seinen 12 Aposteln. Die Figuren haben eine Höhe von rund 40 cm und sind stilvoll bearbeitet. Auf der Unterseite ist der jeweilige Name zu erkennen.

Inside the village church at Newgreen is located on the balustrade of the church temples where the church organ stands a figurine collection of Jesus Christ, framed by his 12 Apostles. The figures have a height of about 40 cm and are stylishly worked. The name can be seen on the bottom.
