Published details of his death from the Find a Grave website (see link at bottom of the page):
"Mr. Earl Cooley, AE, 50, by a blow from a large wooden commander accidentally dropped into a well which he was digging - his skull was much fractured and depressed - he survived the accident nearly two days in a state of almost total insensitivity - the operation of trepanning was performed by a skilful surgeon, but in vain."
