On the plaque:
On September 11, 1885, Jumbo the giant African elephant, star of the Barunum and Bailey Circus met an untimely death when stuck in St. Thomas by a Grand Trunk locomotive. To commermerate the one hundreth anniversary of this tragic event the citizens of St. Thomas and Elgin county erected this monument whech was designed and constructed in Sussex, New Brunswick by Winston Bronm. The city of St. Thomas provided the site. Listed on these plaques are the names of the Jumbo Committee members and the donors who made this tribute to Jumbo possible.
