The National Capital Commission has placed three interpretive signs on site. The panel shared here is the one that describes the site's history.

Jacques-Cartier Park: Former Industrial Site
A former industrial site, the land on which you are now standing has radically changed in both use and appearance. The industrial activities of days gone by have given way to a beautiful green space.

The Era of Water Power
For almost 100 years, shipbuilding and wood processing flourished right here. Water powered the factory mills that were built along the river, and a railway line linked this industrial hub with other major cities in the country.

The economic life of the site gradually declined, and the industrial facilities fell into disuse, as did the railway line. This evolution was part of the larger economic change that occurred in the Capital and other Canadian cities at the beginning of the 20th century.

A New Route on the Riverbank
After the National Capital Commission acquired the land in the 1930s, the site was converted into a park. A multi-use trail was created, which has become part of the Voyageurs Pathway. Today, this trail allows users to travel along the shore of the Ottawa River for several kilometres and to enjoy the superb views of the national Capital from the riverbank.
