Stegosaurus is a 50' by 32' by 32', 40 ton, steel sculpture. It was created by Alexander Calder and occupies a mall area designed by
Daniel Urban Kiley, landscape architect. The mall and later the sculpture was commissioned by the trustees of the Ella Burr McManus Trust Fund at the bequest of Ella Burr McManus, as a memorial to her father, Alfred E. Burr, the founder of the Hartford Times. The sculpture was copyrighted in 1972 and dedicated on October 10, 1973.
Forty-five curved and ribbed steel plates are bolted together to form an abstract version of a stegosaurus. The figure is painted a bright orange-red and stands on five legs forming a series of arched openings. Four large fin-like ribbed triangular plates jut upward from the arches at varying angles.
A monogram, AC, and the copyright year,72, is written on the west leg of the sculpture. A plate, painted the same color of the sculpture is attached to another leg. The plate is inscribed:
