Die Düssel, Namensgeberin der Bewohner ob der Düssel und damit der späteren Stadt Düsseldorf, entspringt am Westrand des Niederbergischen Landes in Oberdüssel bei Neviges/Wülfrath. In Gerresheim, heute ein Stadtteil von Düsseldorf, wird das Gewässer über ein Spaltwerk in die Nördliche und die Südliche Düssel geteilt.

Die nördliche Düssel durchfließt danach im heutigen Stadtgebiet den Ostpark, Grafenberg, Düsseltal, den Zoopark, Derendorf, die Prinz-Georg-Straße, bewässert die Hofgartenteiche (ehem. Festungsgräben), unterquert den Grabbe-Platz und die Mühlenstraße und verläuft offen durch die J. Wimmer-Gasse. Unter dem Burgplatz fließt die Düssel wieder unterirdisch und mündet hier am südlichen Ende des Platzes unterhalb des tiefer liegenden Uferbereichs in den Rhein.

Die Düssel wurde im 18. Jahrhundert um den heutigen Kern Düsseldorfs herum begradigt und durch ehemalige Sumpf- und Broichgebiete geführt. Mit anderen Bächen wassertechnisch verbunden, füllte die Düssel auch die Wasser- und Bastionsgräben der damaligen Festungsbauwerke. Mit Schleifung der Festungsanlagen und deren gartenarchitektonischer Umgestaltung in großzügige Park- und Teichanlagen (Hofgarten, Kö, Spee'scher Graben und Schwanenspiegel) wurde die Düssel auch städtebaulich eingebunden. Es ist das gemeinsame Werk (1802-1824) des Hofbaumeisters C.A. Huschberger, des Hofgärtners M.-S. Weyhe und des Wasserbauingeneurs C.W.G. Bauer.

Die wassertechnische Regulierung der Düssel mit ihren Zuflüssen verhindert die Überflutung des Stadtgebietes bei Hochwasser und ist Garant für den gleichmäßigen Wasserstand aller Düsseldorfer Gewässer. Die Fließlänge der Düssel beträgt 46 Kilometer.

The Düssel, name bearer of the inhabitants "ob der Düssel" and thus the later city of Düsseldorf, originates at the western edge of the Niederbergisches Land in Oberdüssel near Neviges/Wülfrath. In Gerresheim, today a district of Düsseldorf, the water is divided over a cleft into the Northern and the Southern Düssel.

The Northern Düssel flows through the Ostpark, Grafenberg, Düsseltal, the Zoopark, Derendorf, the Prinz-Georg-Strasse, the gardens of the Hofgarten (former fortress burials), crosses below the Grabbe-Platz and Mühlenstraße, and runs along the J. Wimmer-Gasse above-ground. Under the Burgplatz, the Düssel runs underground again and flows into the Rhine at the southern end of the square below the lower bank area.

The Düssel was straightened in the 18th century around the present core of Düsseldorf and led through former swamp and brook areas. With other streams connected by water, the Düssel also filled the bastion ditches of the fortifications. With the sanding of the fortifications and their gardenarchitectonic transformation into generous park and pond systems (Hofgarten, Kö, Spee'scher Graben, and Schwanenspiegel), the Düssel was also integrated into the city architecturally. It is the joint work (1802-1824) of court master-builder C.A. Huschberger, the court gardener M.-S. Weyhe and the water engineer C.W.G. Bauer.

The water technology regulation of the river Düssel with its tributaries prevents the flooding of the city area during floods and is the guarantee for the even water level of all water bodies in Düsseldorf. The flow length of the Düssel is 46 kilometers.
