Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (28 August 1749 – 22 March 1832) was a German writer and statesman. His works include epic and lyric poetry, prose and verse dramas, memoirs, an autobiography, literary and aesthetic criticism, treatises on botany, anatomy, and colour, and four novels. In addition, numerous literary and scientific fragments, more than 10,000 letters, and nearly 3,000 drawings by him exist.
The monument stands on the Ebertstraße on the eastern edge of the Tiergarten, between the Brandenburg Gate and Lennéstrasse, opposite the Monument to the Murdered Jews of Europe.
It reaches a height of six meters, the statue of the poet on a round pedestal is 2.72 meters high.
Three allegorical groups of figures are arranged on the graduated substructure: for lyrical poetry, a muse with lyre and the figure of Eros; for the dramatic poetry a seated female figure with a writing-tool, beside her a genius with the downward torch of death; for research a reading female figure.
The monument was designed by Fritz Schaper and built between 1876 and 1880.
