"Située à l'extrême sud du département du Gard, à la périphérie ouest de la plaine de la Vaunage et à la périphérie du département de l'Hérault, dans une région très viticole, à vingt-sept kilomètres de Nîmes et à vingt-huit de Montpellier, cette ville très pittoresque est connue pour son centre médiéval construit en « damier » le long du fleuve le Vidourle, dont les étroites rues sont enjambées de multiples arcades et porches, pour son château, aujourd'hui en ruine mais en cours de restauration, dont la haute tour accessible aux visiteurs, domine la cité et pour son célèbre pont romain si souvent malmené lors des redoutables vidourlades. La commune est en effet régulièrement assujettie aux inondations lors d'épisodes de pluies cévenoles, le record datant de septembre 2002."
