The Baumhaus (tree house) at the old harbor is one of the main points of interest of the city and clearly illustrates the history of the Hanseatic and harbor city .
The Baumhaus is a listed building in the Hansestadt Wismar in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
The city built the building in the Baroque style in the first half of the 18th century. In the night or in case of danger in delay, employees of the port administration, so-called Bohmschlüter, pulled a chain into the port entrance. At the same time, they also served as a gateway to the harbor. In other cities, such as in Hamburg, a floating long timber was laid from the local tree house into the entrance.

Today the Baumhaus serves primarily as a alternative presentation space for changing exhibitions, workshops and has become a popular meeting place for many art enthusiasts.
