Marker Text:

Trimble's Ford September 11, 1777, while on the march to the Battlefield of Brandywine, the British Army under Howe and Cornwallis crossed the Brandywine at the ford just south of this point.

Sept. 11, 1977 George Washington met British General Howe at Chadds Ford. Not the way he thought he would. Washington split his toops at 3 different fords. Pyle's Ford, to the south, Wistar Ford to the North, and Chadd's Ford in the middle. Washington was sure the main battle would be at Chadds' Ford. He was correct, sort of!

General Howe marched the main part of his army north to an unguarded ford, that Washington did know about. (That unknown ford was Trible's Ford) He than marched south and attacked Washington's right flank. (or according to this sign his rear)

On Sept. 11 a heavy fog blanketed the area providing the British with the cover they needed. Washington lost the battle and left Philadelphia unguarded for Howe's easy access to the town!

Washington and his army retreated to Chester. Congress retreated to Lancaster and than York. And the military supplies where moved to Reading.

The American Army was outwitted, but not demoralized!
