The golf club at Stonehaven was founded on April 13th 1888. The clubhouse was built in June 1889, perched on the cliff edge a couple of miles north of the town.
The structure was basic, with a thatched roof and a single chimney and lasted until 1897 when the course was extended and a new clubhouse was built further to the south.
Today, only the chimney survives, and it stands next to the seventh tee in a precarious position on the edge of the cliff.
A plaque is affixed to the structure with an engraved image of what the clubhouse looked like. The plaque was mounted on April 13th 1988 on the centenary of the club.
