"The capital carvings are a fascinating mixture of scenes from daily life, religious themes, and mythological beasts. Those on the tower capitals include the following scenes: North-East capitals - Sampson and the Lion, a boar hunt (note man with spear, and one hound sliced in half by the boar) and a man harvesting with a sickle; North-West capitals – ‘Green Men’ with foliage, an elephant (with cloven feet) and palm tree, a pelican (symbol of the Mass); South-West capitals – two men with ‘kite’ shields fighting over a woman (St Kyneburgha?); South-East capitals – two dragons fighting and a man with a basket picking grapes."
