"The Botanical Garden of Montpellier, founded in 1593, is an integral part of the Montpellier Faculty of Medicine and the University of Montpellier, and is the oldest botanical garden in France Strasbourg founded in 1619, that of Paris created in 1635 and that of Caen in 1736. This garden has a triple vocation: botanical, historical and university.
When it was founded in 1593 by Pierre Richer de Belleval, the Jardin des Plants of Montpellier was destined for the cultivation of the "simple", but Richer's project rapidly surpassed the only medicinal plants used for the teaching of future doctors and apothecaries To become a true botanical study tool, unpublished at the time.
Its pedagogical value is recognized, it is frequented by many botanists, doctors and pharmacists, schoolchildren and students but also, by lovers of flora, tourists and many lovers of nature and plants. The Jardin des Plantes, which extends over 4.6 hectares, is owned by the State, assigned to the University of Montpellier and managed by the Faculty of Medicine of Montpellier.
It is one of the most beautiful elements of Montpellier's landscaped heritage and it was classified as a site in 1982 and classified as a historical monument in 1992. Its restoration, framed by a preliminary study of the chief architect of the Historical Monuments , Is underway (2010), with the rehabilitation of the Martins greenhouse and the development of its surroundings.
