Unter Entelechie (altgriechisch) versteht man in der Philosophie etwas, das sein Ziel (Telos) in sich selbst hat. Der Begriff wurde von Aristoteles in der Metaphysik IX, 8, eingeführt. Er bezeichnet die Form, die sich im Stoff verwirklicht, besonders im Sinne einer dem Organismus innewohnenden Kraft, die ihn zur Selbstverwirklichung bringt. Der Sache nach tritt der Begriff der Entelechie überall auf, wo teleologisches Denken herrscht, so bei Thomas von Aquin, in der Monadenlehre von Leibniz, bei Goethe und im Vitalismus, insbesondere bei Driesch.

Entelechie (ancient Greek) in philosophy means something that has its goal (telos) in itself. The concept was introduced by Aristotle in Metaphysics IX, 8. It designates the form which is realized in the material, especially in the sense of a force which is inherent in the organism, which brings it to self-realization. The concept of entelechy occurs in all cases where teleological thought prevails, as in Thomas Aquinas, in the monadic doctrine of Leibniz, in Goethe, and in vitalism, especially in Driesch.
