Cranmere Pool is a small depression within a peat bog high on Dartmoor where the first "letterbox" hobby started. this being the forerunner to our great pastime of geocaching.

The original "letterbox" was placed at Cranmere pool. where moorland travellers could leave a note. this later grew to people leaving self addressed postcard, where upon other travellers would take the post card describe their journey and then post it to the original traveller who had placed the card in the "letter box"
Letterboxing began in 1854 when a Dartmoor guide named James Perrott placed a glass bottle at Cranmere Pool, and encouraged hikers that made the considerable walk to the site to leave a calling card as a record of their achievement.
Letterboxing is a combination of orienteering and puzzle solving, letter, using a map and compass...having found the rough location from the clue supplied. Such as look for the "pointed rock" (which was always open to conjecture). Then having to "pace" on a compass bearing to where the letterbox should be.
