This monument is dedicated to James Andrews and the Andrews' Raiders. It was placed in the Chattanooga National Cemetery in 1890 by the state of Ohio.
James Andrews himself was a civilian and spy from the Union but his Raiders were a group of 23 Union volunteer soldiers from the Ohio 2nd, 21st, and 33rd infantry in the Civil War.
On April 12, 1862, Andrews' Raiders stole a train near Atlanta and drove it north to Chattanooga, destroying the train tracks, rest stops, and telegraph lines along the way. This was a serious blow to the Confederate troops.
Andrews and the Raiders, however, were unsuccessful in getting back to Chattanooga, running out of fuel around 20 miles from Chattanooga. All the raiders fled the train but were captured and faced trial. Andrews and 7 others were convicted and were hanged, now buried near this memorial. Others escaped prison while others still were exchanged for Confederate soldiers.
