The cemetery dates back to 1823 when St James Anglican Church was founded. That was a time before Bytown had been founded. On the other side of the river, Bytown would eventually become the city of Ottawa, the nation's capital. In 1823, Hull was the significant European settlement in the region.

Hull, Quebec, was settled by Philemon Wright in 1799. In the early days, the village was known as Wrightsville. Many members of the Wright family are buried in this cemetery. The St James Church building is no longer a church but its cemetery lives on.

There is no longer cemetery signage.
