During an Indian raid at Fort Parker, Texas (about 6 miles from mural location) nine-year-old Cynthia Ann Parker was kidnap and her family was killed. She was adopted into the Commanche tribe, where she became the wife of Chief Peta Nocona. She had three children with him, including the last free Comanche chief, Quanah Parker.
Chief Peta Nocona supposedly died at the Pease River battle at the time of Cynthia Ann's recovery. This claim, however, was later disputed by the couple's son Quanah.
