The monument in honor of the geologist Ernst Heinrich Karl von Dechen (25. March 1800 – 15. February 1889) commemorates a former patron of the region.
Dechen was one of the founders and the first chairman of the "Verschönerungsverein für das Siebengebirge". On the 25th of May, 1892 the VVS established the seven-metre-high monument from Drachenfelser Trachyt with a round bronze relief of his face.
