Lucy Josphine Paticow (or
Patiacow) was born in 1817. Her tombstone has PATICOW etched on it, but her name was often spelled PATIACOW. Although she married Jim Wagon, she continued to use her born name, as was her practice. Her FindAGrave entry biography (which uses both spellings) says this about her:
She rode her horse from Texas to Kansas with her young son, Joe Wagon, during the Civil War. She rode by night and hid out by day in order to escape the soldiers who she believed to be after her. Her bravery in this feat was remembered and talked about for many years. Patiacow and Joe made the journey from Kansas to Washington County and received an allotment.
She traded her homemade bead work for groceries.
Before she died in 1924, she had been the oldest living Native American in Oklahoma. Her long life was attributed by her friends to her living close to nature.
