Clifton country park is on the site of a former coal mine near to the River Irwell.

The site has been returned to nature and as well as the climbing boulde rthere are a number of walking trails, a horse riding trail and fishing.

The climbing boulder is constructed from Bendcrete, a ferro cement system based on the design of concrete container ships. It has been shaped and painted to look like a natural outcrop of rock.
