Marker Text:

On September 10, 1921, Williamson County awoke to the greatest natural disaster in its history. The remains of a powerful hurricane brought a deluge - America's heaviest rainfall to that time - to central Texas. The San Gabriel River overflowed its banks; in Georgetown, the flood demolished the bridge over the river and covered mucho of the town in water. Survivor Mrs. Procera Gonzales said, "I felt horrible hits from all sides, and the current carried me like a feather. I went under and came up again; already my feet couldn't touch the ground, and I didn't know anything. Later, my husband has confirmed that I was dragged more than a mile, by a current more than 15 feet deep.

At least ninety-two people died in Williamson County. Most were Mexicans who worked on cotton farms along the river east of Georgetown. We know little about their individual lives. Most were likely recent migrants escaping the violence of the Mexican Revolution. And since farmers often not customarily provide their workers housing, most lived in vulnerable tents or shacks along the river. Their stories remain largely lost to history.
