Long Description:
"The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, called Church of the Resurrection by Eastern Christians, is a large Christian church within the Old City of Jerusalem. The ground the church rests on is venerated by many Christians as Golgotha, the Hill of Calvary where the New Testament records that Jesus Christ was crucified. It also contains the place where Jesus was buried (the sepulchre). The church has been an important pilgrimage destination since the 4th century, and the portions of it administered by the Orthodox are in the care of the Church of Jerusalem." (visit link)

"The Order of the Holy Sepulchre originates in a Christian organisation, the Canons, established at the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem in 1099, immediately after the conquest of the City by the Crusaders. It has religious aims and the function of protecting pilgrims to the Holy Land. Different to other knightly Orders towards the end of the 13th century, members of the Order settled in a number of western European States where the history of each individual group was rich and well documented." Some of our pictures show the Cross of Jerusalem, the symbol of the order, on the giant candlesticks inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The symbol depicts a large red cross surrounded by 4 small crosses that represent the five wounds of Jesus as well as the suffering in the Holy Land with the loss of its own blood.
