Oakwell Hall Country Park's public sculpture was officially launched on Sunday, October 19 2008. The steel sculpture, "Fiddlehead and Fernblades", stands over six metres tall and takes pride of place on Colliery Field, land that was reclaimed from the former Gomersal Colliery.

Its fern leaf design is inspired by the coal-forming carbon-iferous ferns that grew there millions of years ago and by their present day descendants that still grow there today. One element of the sculpture is an unfurling fern leaf, which has helped give the piece its name. In the olden days, the leaves were called 'fiddleheads' given their resemblance to the scroll work ends on violins.

Designed by Manchester artist Adrian Moakes, the sculpture is the result of a community project managed by Loca, the arts and regeneration agency of Kirklees Council, on behalf of the Friends of Oakwell Hall, which secured almost £10,000 in "Awards for All" lottery funding to commission a new sculpture for the country park.

School children and residents from nearby Fieldhead, members of the Friends of Oakwell, staff and visitors to Oakwell Hall Country Park were involved in the design process through consultation events and arts workshops.

They were all invited to the launch, which was carried out by Councillor Liz Smale, Kirklees Cabinet Member for Leisure and Neighbourhood Services, who commented: "Those involved in the design process can be proud of the result of their efforts. They have helped to create a striking and elegant work of art that will be enjoyed by Oakwell's many visitors and is a fitting focal point on Colliery Field."
