International Harvester was started by Cyrus B. McCormick, and acquired other tractor and farm equipment manufacturers over the years; often keeping the acquired company's name in the equipment manufactured by them.
Prior to the Farmall tractors, your typical tractor (such as the Fordsons and the John Deere model D) were low-slung and mainly used (1) to pull implements, and (2) to operate implements by belt. But due to their builds, they were not good for managing row crops without obliterating a good deal of the crop. IH decided that it could sell more tractors if it could "free" the farmer from having to decide between keeping his horses and buying a tractor for some tasks, or just selling the old faithful oat-burners and buying a tractor that could do it all. By designing the tractor to work in row crops -- lifting it up and putting on narrower wheels, etc. -- IH gave the farmer a tractor that could do it all -- Farm All -- without the need for horses (they hoped). And thus, the Farmall.
This beautifully kept Farmall F series tractor is kept in the back of the huge Robert Is Here fruit stand in Florida City, Florida. It is one of several tractors on display here, since the stand owners spend a lot of time on tractors of various makes and models.
