El segundo parque eólico más grande de España fue inaugurado ayer en Fuerteventura por el ministro de Industria y Energía, Juan Manuel Eguiagaray, y el presidente del Gobierno de Canarias, Manuel Hermoso. El mayor es el de Tarifa (Cádiz). El parque de Cañada del Río-Costa Calma está ubicado en la península de Jandía, al sur de la isla, y cuenta con 45 aerogeneradores, de fabricación española. La potencia instalada es de 10.260 kilovatios, lo que viene a cubrir el 14% del consumo de energía eléctrica de la isla.La inversión total ha sido de 1.651 millones de pesetas, aportados por el FEDER de la UE (555,8 millones), el Consorcio de Aguas de Fuerteventura, Unión Eléctrica de Canarias (Unelco), la Administración autonómica y la empresa Made.
Con la puesta en marcha de este parque, que fue polémico por posibles interferencias en la avifauna autóctona (la hubara canaria), la potencia eléctrica de origen eólico instalada en España supera los 75 megavatios, diez veces más que la que había en 1990.

The second largest wind farm in Spain was inaugurated yesterday in Fuerteventura by the Minister of Industry and Energy, Juan Manuel Eguiagaray, and the President of the Canary Islands Government, Manuel Hermoso. The largest is Tarifa (Cadiz). The Cañada del Río-Costa Calma park is located on the peninsula of Jandía, south of the island, and has 45 wind turbines, made in Spain.
