The sign says, "During the Spanish and Mexican rule of California, the governors encouraged the settlement of the territory by establishing large land grants. Many of these were later turned into Ranchos that were devoted to raising cattle and sheep.

Orange County's economy was largely based on ranching and agriculture in the late 1800s and 1900s. It is a very important part of our history and contributed to the prosperity of the county today.

Where you are standing today was once part of Rancho Mission Viejo. Over 125 years ago, the land owner, Richard O'Neill, managed the land and had extensive agricultural operation. It was said to be one of "the greatest of all California ranchos".
