Lion Fountain Sculpture - Valletta, Malta - Lion Statues on Waymarking.com

The Lion Fountains was sculpted out of the native limestone by Maltese sculptor Mariano Gerada (1766-1823). A small but well done sculpture of a lion is standing in an arched niche standing in front of a sculpted canopy. The male lion is depicted in right profile with his head turned slightly to the right.

Below the lion is rectangular dado with the carved image of a round-faced curly haired boy framed by a drape which extends up to a peg and then falls downward. Water pours forth from the mouth of the boy and falls into a semi-oval basin below.

The entire fountain is situated against the wall of St. John's Co-cathedral and raised off the ground with three wraparound steps lead up to the fountain. The fountain was once connected to an aqueduct developed by Grandmaster Alof de Wignacourt in the early 17th century.
