In 1236, the Dominican monastery was founded by St. John, who, about 300 years later, was to give the foundation its first home and the name. The real predecessor, however, was the Cistercian Nunnery of Herwardeshude. This nunnery was founded in 1246 by countess Heilwig, the wife of the Count Adolf IV von Schauenburg, who had entered the Franciscan Order, outside of the then area of the city of Hamburg on a hill above the Elbe near the village Herwardeshude.
For the development of the monastery, the privileges given to nuns by the Holstein counts in 1293 were of particular importance. For ever, the fields of the villages of Heimichhude and Odersvelde were sold free of charge, and the liberation of all charges and services was confirmed.
From this time the name Vrauwendal originates for the valley at the village of Odersvelde on the banks of the Alster. But the old name of "Herwardeshude Monastery" also remained in use. Afterwards, the Harvestehude district on the right bank of the river Alster was later named. Many street names such as Frauenthal, Klostergarten, Nunnerstieg and Abteistraße still point to the monastery's former abode in this area.
This monastery building was built between 1912 and 1914 by R.Karl and L.Endresen. The pictorial assembly, with its shielded garden and clock tower, gives an idea of monastic role models. Sophisticated façade partitioning and differentiation of the floor give the housing estate a representative look.
The monastery was founded around 1236 in the inner city and in 1536 it was transformed into the "Frauenstift" by the Reformation. In the course of urban development it was moved to the Klosterwall in 1837, then here.
