Die Alte Handelsbörse wurde 1678/1679 im Stil des Barock errichtet und diente den Leipziger Kaufleuten als Treff- und Handelspunkt. Der Beschluss zum Bau der Börse ging von 30 Großkaufleuten aus, weil es 1678 üblich wurde, sich beim Abschluss großer Geschäfte in einem neutralen Raum zu treffen.
Im Jahr 1877 wäre das schmuckvolle Gebäude fast für die Errichtung eines größeren Rathauses abgerissen wurden. Dieser Plan wurde (glücklicherweise) aufgrund fehlender finanzieller Mittel nicht realisiert.
Im Jahr 1886 wurde in Leipzig ein neues Börsengebäude [wikipedia: (visit link) ] errichtet, womit die bisherige Börse von nun an ‘Alte’ Handelsbörse genannt wurde. Heute wird der ehemalige Börsensaal für kulturelle Veranstaltungen wie Lesungen, Konzerte und Ausstellungen genutzt.

ENGLISH:

The Old Handelsbörse was built in Baroque style in 1678/1679 and served as a meeting and trading place for the merchants of Leipzig. The decision to construct the exchange came from 30 major merchants, because in 1678 it become customary to meet in a neutral area when big deals were concluded.
In the year 1877 the beautiful building should been demolished for the construction of a larger town hall. This plan was (fortunately) not realized because of financial trouble.
In 1886 a new exchange building [wikipedia: (visit link) ] was erected in Leipzig and the former exchange was called from now as 'old' exchange (Alte Handelsbörse). Today, the former exchange is used for cultural events like readings, concerts and exhibitions.
