The viewing platform has information panels about the Silica Rapids and provides an excellent view of the water rushing past, with a background of Mt Ruapehu.
To reach this view point, follow the Silica Rapids loop track from the Whakapapa Stream Bridge near the campground at Whakapapa Village on Bruce Rd. The track is a loop track through mountain beech and sub-alpine shrub land in the Tongariro National Park. Starting at the Whakapapa Village Information Centre, you will walk through bush to follow a stream to the creamy Silica Rapids terraces. The track crosses the slopes above the Rapids and comes out onto the Bruce Rd about 2km above the starting point, or you can return back downhill the way you started.
